Hyperion Interactive Reporting Sandbox Setup

This post is intended to provide the steps needed to build a sandbox environment to try out the Hyperion Interactive Reporting (IR) in preparation for a migration to the Oracle OBIEE 11/12 Analytics.

For background information on Hyperion IR, go to this link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/index-101307.html

The sandbox to be set up will be hosted in a VM machine. You can use VMware Workstation, or Oracle Virtual Box to house the following software installations:

  • Windows 2008 R4 64bit Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle 11gR2 64bit Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle EPM Foundation 11.1.2.4
  • Hyperion Interactive Reporting (IR) 11.1.2.4
  • Hyperion IR Client

Download Software Components

  • Hyperion Interactive Reporting – follow this link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/epm/downloads/interactive-reporting-1112x-2409231.html

  • EPM (Enterprise Performance Management) Foundation – follow this link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/epm/downloads/epm-1112x-2409226.html

  • Oracle 11gR2 Database – follow this link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html

  • Oracle VirtualBox – follow this link https://www.virtualbox.org/
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 – follow this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11093

For Hyperion, and EPM downloads, the following zip files should now be available on your local download drive

Prepare your VM

  • Download and install the Oracle VirtualBox
  • In Oracle VirtualBox, create a new machine to install the Windows Server 2008R2 (Full Enterprise Edition)
  • Configure the above machine with at least 8GB RAM, and 2 CPUs. Below is a screenshot of my sandbox VM
  • Once the machine is ready, install Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise (Full Installation)

Configure Windows 2008 R2

The following steps are necessary to ensure a successful installation of the Oracle EPM, and Hyperion IR.

  • Disable Firewall to ease access between your host machine and the VM for Windows 2008 R2

  • Modify UAC (User Account Control)

  • Create a new account, e.g. EPM, for the owner of the EPM, and Hyperion software components

  • Add .NET Framework features

  • Restart the VM, and log on with the new account EPM to continue with the following software installations

Install Software Packages

All the downloaded files should be unzipped as shown below

  • client_install – this contains the installation files for the EPM Client
  • IR_install – this contains the installation files for the EPM Foundation and Hyperion Interactive Reporting components
  • ora11g_install – this contains the installation files for the Oracle 11gR2 Database

Install Oracle 11gR2

  • Go to directory ..\ora11g_install\database, and right click on setup.exe to run as Administrator
  • Follow the instructions to create your test Oracle instance with the default name ORCL and Character Set Unicode (AL32UTF8). At the end of the installation, you should have the services started as shown below (Notes: I used the instance name as HYPERION instead of ORCL)

  • Add a new environment variable TNS_ADMIN as follows

  • Run SQL*Plus from DOS, or Powershell, Command Line to create a default logon for the EPM software as following

PS C:\dload> sqlplus sys@hyperion as sysdba

Install EPM Foundation, and Hyperion IR

  • Change directory to the location of the unzipped EPM, and IR files (e.g. c:\dload\IR_install)
  • Right click on installTool.cmd to run as Administrator

  • Ensure all prerequisites are ok, and resolve them if necessary

  • The following components should be selected by default for EPM Foundation, and Hyperion IR (Notes: uncheck Performance Management Architect since it is not required by Hyperion IR)

  • Monitor installation progress to completion (allowing up to 45mins)

  • At the end of the installation, click Configure to finalize the necessary configuration for EPM

  • Follow the instructions and accept the defaults except for the highlights shown below

  • Review the final completion status, run Services to edit the startup option for Hyperion services to Manual, and restart the server

Below are the components installed by EPM, and Hyperion IR

Additional Hyperion services are also configured as shown below

Install the Hyperion IR Client

  • Change directory to the location of the unzipped IR Client files (e.g. c:\dload\client_install\OracleInteractiveReportingClients)
  • Run OracleInteractiveReportingClients.exe as Administrator
  • Follow the instructions to completion.
  • Below are new components installed by the IR Client

  • Restart the machine to completion the EPM, and Hyperion IR installation.

Validate EPM, Hyperion IR, and IR Client Installations

  • Ensure the Oracle database services are started after a restart of the machine.

  • Start the EPM services as follows

  • A DOS windows box will appear as shown below to indicate startup progress (allow up to 5mins to complete the startup)

  •  New Hyperion services should now be started.

  • The Hyperion Workspace works better in FireFox. Download and install it before starting the Workspace. Also make sure pop-up is enabled and FireFox is the default browser.
  • Start Hyperion Workspace

Use the logon ID admin configured earlier to connect to Workspace

You should now see the Home Page of the Workspace as shown below

  • Connect to the Hyperion Oracle database, and reset the schema password of SH as follows

PS C:\Users\EPM> sqlplus sys@hyperion as sysdba

  • Start the IR Studio as shown below

Then set up a new database connection to the Oracle schema SH to ensure the tool can communicate with the database ok.

Use password sh as configured above

You should now have the database connection file SH.oce that is ready for use with this Sample Report

.Unzip the file

.Copy the sample report file q_sales_Test.bqy to C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\biplus\data\Open Catalog Extensions

.Open the above file from IR Studio, and test run the sample report.

Have fun playing with the Hyperion Interactive Reporting…
